While there were many reports that Niagara Falls had frozen over during the winter of 2013-2014, there was still a lot of water moving on the morning of March 6, 2014 when temperatures reached a low of -4 F.
The originial Oak Orchard Lighthouse, located at the end of a pier in Point Breeze, NY, washed away during a storm on December 23, 1916. Local residents built a replica lighthouse in 2010 that now serves as a museum.
Located 30 miles east of the Niagara River, this lighthouse was named Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse. It is located in Golden Hill State Park on Lake Ontario in NY. Today, the lighthouse is open for tours and guests can even stay overnight in the assistant keeper's quarters.
Brockport calls itself the "The Victorian Village on the Erie Canal." Brockport recently remodeled the village portion of the Erie canal, providing a bricked walkway, a brand new canal visitor's center, and several pieces of art.
Set between the fruit orchards and a Great Lake on the Seaway Trail, many of Pultneyville's activities focus on summer sailing and theatre. The hamlet boasts an active marina and is home to the second-oldest little theater in the United States.
Some days Lake Ontario resembles a fresh-water ocean with huge waves. Most days there are some waves. And every once in a while we are treated with a perfect calm over the lake. These are my favorite days to visit and photograph Lake Ontario.
